In Kethuvim (Proverbs) 30:1-5 it says
“The words of Agur the son of Jakeh, [man of ] Massa; The speech of the man to Ithiel, to Ithiel and Ucal: I am brutish, less than a man; I lack common sense. I have not learned wisdom, nor do I possess knowledge of the Holy One. Who has ascended heaven and come down? Who has gathered up the wind in the hollow of his hand? Who has wrapped the waters in his garment? Who has established all the extremities of the earth? What it his name or his son’s name, if you know it? Every word of God is pure, A shield to those who take refuge in Him.”
It says in Proverbs 30:1 that the speaker “does not possess Knowledge of the Holy One”. But the speaker correctly says that “Every word of God is pure, a shield to those who take refuge in Him.” So the speaker is wise. It has been said that those who recognize how little they know about God, know more than those who think they know everything.
Who is Agur, the son of Jakeh of Massa? Acoording to the book, Everyone in the Bible, by William P. Barker, (Old Tappan, New Jersey: Fleming H. Revell Company), p 23, entry on “Agur”, it says Agur was “A Jewish sage mentioned only as “son of Jakeh” in Proberbs 30. Agur was a collector of the sayings in the Book of Proverbs.
There are many prophecies of the Messiah liberating Israel and bringing a golden age. In Nevíim (Isaiah) 9:5-6 It says that the Messiah will be a son and his kingdom shall last forever. Only God can have an eternal kingdom. This prophecy was not fulfilled at the time of Isaiah and is still to come.
Jewish people do not generally believe that Jesus of Nazareth is the Messiah because he was crucified and did not liberate Israel from the Roman Empire.
But there are also prophecies of God suffering servant in Nevíim Zecahriah 12:10, the translation in the TANAKH is “They will look to me upon those who have been slain”, but the Christian translation is “They will look on me, the one they have slain.”
Zechariah 12:10, in context, from the New International Version of the Bible:
“And I will pour out on the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem a spirit of grace and supplication. They will look on me, the one they have pierced, and they will mourn for him as one mourns for an only child, and grieve bitterly for him as one grieves for a firstborn son.” Again, it mentions a son.
This is preceded by Zachariah 12:9 “In that day I will but annihilate all nations that come against Jerusalem.” Therefore there is time before the anointed comes to fulfill the promises of his kingdom in which he is slain by his own people.
There two possible ways to translate this passage. But in Proverbs 30:4, it says that God has a son. Therefore it is important to search the scriptures to discover who is God’s son. Jesus fits the translation of the Christian Bible perfectly. It is worthwhile to pray to the Creator, the Lord, and ask Him to reveal “Who is his Son, and what is his divine nature?” In the end, the answer must come from the Lord himself, for all people who sincerely seek Him shall find Him.
